Mindful Photography with Gilly Walker 

Saturday 28th April, 2018 | 10am – 4pm

Spend a day using a mindful approach to photography to tune into the natural world around you, relax your mind, and discover your creativity.

  • Develop your capacity for mindful presence and deepen your connection to the beauty of the extraordinary world you live in.
  • Walk around our relaxing estate in Nottinghamshire and practise simple steps and techniques that lead to seeing the world in a new way, enabling you to uncover the potential in every mindful moment.
  • Find out how photography can help you develop your capacity for mindfulness, and see how a mindful approach to photography helps bring out your creativity and originality.

This workshop is for you if:

  • You would like to cultivate mindfulness in a practical, enjoyable way.
  • You would like to be become more tuned in to what is around you and find the extraordinary in ordinary things.
  • You would like to learn how to take a different approach to photography, one that will bring out your inherent creativity.
  • You have a digital camera or a camera option on your phone.

This workshop is suitable for both complete novices to mindfulness, photography or both, but also for people with some experience who have an interest in how mindfulness can be applied to photography.

All materials are provided apart from your photography tool, which can be either a camera or a phone with camera inbuilt.  You can then keep a photo memento of the day or turn it into a canvas or frame it for your wall.

Refreshments will be served to you throughout the day along with a two-course handmade lunch served with a glass of local wine.

Outline of the day

10:00 Welcome with light refreshments

10:15 Introduction discussion

  • What is mindfulness?
  • How does mindfulness relate to photography?

10.45 Mindfulness techniques:

  • Exercises in mindful seeing, involving a series of short 5 minutes walking meditations

11.15 Refreshment break with snack

11.30 Mindful photography slideshow:

  • Examples of how to approach the after lunch exercises.

12:00 Lunch break

  • 2 course homemade lunch served with a glass of local wine.

1.00 Practical exercise

  • One or more longer photo walks around the estate giving you a chance to put into practice what you have learned.

3.00 Refreshment break and snack

3.15 Discussion 

  • Come together to discuss experiences and share photographs if you feel comfortable
  • Discuss ideas of how to further develop the practice of mindful photography

4.00 Home time

  • Leave for home feeling relaxed, tuned in to your surroundings.
  • Take away a printed image that encapsulate your day

To ensure the quality of your personal experience, group size will be limited to 10.

About Gilly

Now based in Newark, Gilly grew up in Scotland where she developed an early love of nature, landscape and art. Ten years ago she took an Access to Art & Design course where she explored a variety of art techniques and discovered a passion for photography. She later went on to study photography with the Open collage of Arts.

Her photographs have been published in several magazines, including ‘On Landscape Magazine’, and she also writes about photography, creativity and mindfulness on her blog.

She has many years of teaching experience in a variety of subjects, including several years teaching in community learning for Canterbury College in Kent, also helping set up, design and teaching photography courses for Hairy Goat, a London- based photo tour company.
